my small guppy female has a constant like gravid spot behind her silverish coloured belly, but ive noticed a dark spot on 1 side of her belly in the sliver coloured part of her belly! is this a gravid spot? if not what is it? ive placed her into a 10 gallon birthing tank just in case!
All replies will be much appreciated

Thanks in advance,

Dean.

It may be a marking. Some of my Guppies, even the males, have various black spots on them. :)

How old is she?

If she is still maturing, and growing up, she may be developing markings. Other then that, it might be a disease. Is she acting any different? Or showing any symptoms?

Okay, I'm just going to guess she is developing some markings.

Maybe some other people will have other possibilities... :)

I would say markings most likely. I have a male that I swear is part chameleon. He has several black spots in the silver area of his belly. When the light is out, they will fade and when I turn the light back on, I could swear he was another fish. They come back after a little time in the light, though. It's like my neons who fade when the light is out too.

I have some wild-type feeder Guppies. Mostly just the males have random black spots on their bodies, but a couple of the females do, too. It's just coloring.

Well, are they very, very small with a tanish color around them? If so, those could possibly be eggs that are developing. That doesn't mean they're fertile though. If you've had her for 3 months, even if she was a new born when you got her, she is mature enough to have babies. I read that they can reproduce as early as 5 weeks old.

But if the spots aren't as I described, then they are probably just markings!

Hope this helps :D

EDIT: They are definitely coloring... I just re-read your post. I misunderstood it. Sorry :*)

And for when she does get pregnant (notice I said when), you don't need to separate her until the gravid is pitch black and her stomach is square. She will be lethargic, also. Then you need to separate her. If she doesn't give birth w/in 24 hrs, heat the water a little bit more. Put tons of plants for babies to hide in, and then remove her when she is done. After 5 more weeks she will give birth again. She can give birth up to 5-6 times after 1 single mating. They can store sperm.
Sorry if i told you stuff you already new, just wanted to cover everything! :D
