Hi all,

Ok so i know there are the obvious signs and i also know you have to look for the gravid spot but what does that look like. My 2 platy's are rather large (they are really fat) and one of them has a dark patch forming inside where i think the gravid spot should be, but i have never actually seen it before.

Does anyone have a piture of what it should look like???

Thanks
Emz

Hey,

here's a pic of a gravid spot on a guppy. But its pretty close to all the other breeds .

Thanks for that. I dont think my two are pregnant then, there dark patches dont look anything like that. I'll keep an eye on them anyway, just to be sure.

Thanks again
Emz

Well, she was deffinately pregnant, and gave birth last night, i have seen two little babies swimming around today :D

Question, how do you clean the gravel and do water changes with these tiny little guys, i dont want to suck them up?

Carefully

Then before you tip the old water have a good look in the bucket for any that did get sucked up.

Since changing my tank to sand I only had to hover it once, it's amazing how clean it stays (have corys & clowns & I think that helps as well).

If i do suck any up by mistake, will it do them any damage??? :/

Provided they don't drop from a great height into the pail then they will be all right. Keep the end of the syphon tube under water.

I extract my convict cichlid babies via syphon tube and have accidentally sucked up platty bfry as well & they were none the worse for the experience.

My platies have never really shown a gravid spot, its definately more prominent on guppy females. Platies are just fat! Bless em, how many fry did you have? I had 15(rough guess) born on saturday :)

I saw 2 fry a few days ago (when i first noticed that they had been born) since then i have only seen one and thats because i disturbed him when i was cleaning the tank.

I think if there are any more they have found themselves a good little cave to hide in.

Bless 'em :)
