i have just got a red tail shark and a platy and the shark thinks he owns the place. he keeps on chacing and niping the platy  what can i do to stop it????

That's the behaviour of a red tailed shark, how many gallons is the tank, and does he have his own hding spots in the tank.

Yes they need a 40gal, that tank is way to small, i would take him back to the lfs, as he will just pick the fish off as the tank is too small for him, sorry.

Well some fish that are already old to the tank may pick on new fish. They sometimes think that the new arrival is a threat to his territory. But I isolate the one that picks on him in a isolator.. Then eventually they would stop. :D :fish:

The problem is red tailed sharks like the room and territory, and that tanks is way to small, seen it many time, if you don't buy a bigger tank for him, well the chasing will just carry on, could even end in him just picking the fish off one by one.
