The title says it all really

I have this stuff all over my plants (except the crypts) and on all my rocks and "tank furniture"

My NO3 is pretty high at about 50-60 pmm.

I guess I am really asking how to lower that!

And is it possible to out grow aglae - can I add fertislisers to my tank to help the other plants grown and make better use of the nutrients? - so of like a kick start, I kknow it would help the algae grow too but I thought there was a way to out grown this stuff in particular

I f I added more plants would that help?

In case I have the name totally wrong it is the short black furry stuff that grows in carpet over everything.

thank you for any help.

Its been a while since I have been here, so hope this is in the right place.

thanks

Lucy

Hi goldfishgeek :)

Welcome to the forum! :hi:

Is this the kind of thing you are talking about?

I'll move your thread to our Planted Tanks section where you will get some good advice from the folks who know the most about algae problems. :D

Hi Lucy

I suggest you try This thread as your first port of call. Although I've not tried it myself, but will no doubt when it get the stiff in my tank.

Also I’m no expert on these matters other people will probably need to help with the underlying cause, but in the meantime I suggest you post you tank stats (lighting, filtration, etc) and any water quality measurements you have (KH, GH, CO2, NO3, etc) so the others can see what you've got.

Hope this helps

Sam

yes, that is the stuff, thank you for posting a picture.

I have 50w of light, and two Fluval filters and heater, tank is at 79'

I have liverbearers and two keyhole cichlids.

its 35G.

So is it possible to out plant the algae. not keen on chemicals, but I guess flourish excel is fertiliser which I don't use but will give it a go.

off to fish shop tomorrow

thanks so far will let you know what happens

Lucy

outgrowing the algae is key but you might need a bunch of fast growers like stem plants to help out..nitrates of 50 to 60 ppm sounds a little high to me..a couple waterchanges a couple days apart might help bring that down some..20ppm is a pretty good number because plants will use the nitrates for growth. i believe ive read that siamese algae eaters will munch on that, but you might wanna wait for more replys..i think it needs to be siamese not chinese or ottos.
