ok this is odd,

the other day i borke my pump

The pump itself does actually work...its just on the end (where the water flows OUT of the pump) used to be a plastic cover...this is the thing that is broken.

Well im worried if i put fish in this tank (small ones like mollies/tetras/guppies ect) that they may be stupid and swim right into the whole and get all chopped up

So.........how can i cover this filter back up? what can i stick/place in/over the hole?

Thanks

maybe put like a panty hose over it or something. i dont know if i fully understand the question. but maybe that will work.

that sounds like a good idea to me although you will need to check it regularly for blockages as the mesh tends to be quite close.

Panty hose are tights in the UK in case you needed that info :D

HHAHAHAHA yeah i know  wonder if i can pinch a bit of some of my mums :fun:

yeah thats what i mean, the hole where the water flows OUT off is coverless, and if you look in you can see the inside of the pump, so asome ikle fish might swim in there and die..

so i need some kind of cover....but i think a pantyhose would be too fine and would prob blow off and float round my tank, lol (also would look ugly)

I have no idea what to put there :dunno:

was the bit you broke off like a bit of plastic with a small hole in it where the water came out?

couldnt you set the filter so the outlet is above or just touching the water level so the fish cant get in there?... might be a bit loud mind but thats better than chewed up fish!!!

I cant really, (coz its like a built unit) how can i post up a pic? (i can try use my webcam) so i can show you what i mean

well if it's the out let ( i asume that the water is going away from the pump) then it should be fine as long as it's on full balst ur fish can't reach the impelers and even if they could they won't.

Most aquarium stuff use a standsrdised system the fittings are usually 1/4, 1/2, 1/3 of an inch so u can but bits for it. if u can't get some sorta epoxy resin and glue the broken bits back the resign won't harm the fish as long as it's set properly.

If the water is flowing out, i dont think many fish (especially the small ones) would be strong enough to swim against the current. You could get some coarse sponge and make a tube over the pipe. I do that on my intake in my fry tank so the little ones don't get sucked up into the filter.

In addition to this, most filters will have at least one type of filter media that will prevent fish from getting at the impeller and being harmed.

I suggest doing the same thing I do when I get fry that can get sucked into my filter intake.

I tried nylon hose, but it got clogged very quickly... Also if you are using nylon hose make sure to rinse it out before adding it to your tank.

Anyway, after the clogging of the hose, I went to my LFS and they suggested using a small sponge sold as filter media. Worked like a charm! I just cut a slit into the end with a knife and slid it over the intake. The smallest sponge they had sold for less than $1 ... cheaper than nylon hose I believe :p
