Ok, I am visiting my brother this weekend... he has had a tank for 5+ years (75g). He recently breed cichlids so the tank must be in good shape.

We just did an API test and got the following results, pH = 7.0, Ammonia = between 0 and .25 (not absolute 0), Nitrite = .25, Nitrate = 40.

When a tank is cycled, the ammonia should be 0 and the nitrite should be 0 - right?

If that is right, I was wondering why he was showing a little ammonia and nitrite.

One note to add -- he recently added a pleco (5 days ago) because he had a good amount of algae buildup. That pleco has gone nuts and sucked the glass clean... so could the ammonia and nitrite be a result of heavy activity from a pleco?

Thanks for any comments ---- still learning!

what kind of pleco, plecos are very dirty fish and some get HUGE!

Could well be. Pleco's are big waste producers, so it might just be that the filter hasn't quite caught up with the increased bio load yet :) Keep checking over the comming weeks and see if it drops.
