Hello. I have recently purchased a couple jewel cichlids and had them make a pair. I was housing them temporarily in a 55 gallon with some mbuna cichlids. But i have a 15 gallon tank now that has been running for a month with no fish in it. I was hoping i could house the pair there since they are together im guessing agression wont be a problem they are still some what juveniles. I know as they get bigger i will have to upgrade the tank but for now is this fine? - Thanks

Should be OK as temporary housing for juveniles, although I hear jewels can grow pretty fast. Just be aware that a small tank may increase their aggression towards each other, so keep an eye on them.

IMO it is too small. I had 2 juveniles in a 30+ gallon and it was not big enough for them. Everytime the female was even in the males sights he was taking off after her. If you try it, get ready to upgrade quickly if they need it. And I don't have tons of experience but I've found they are the fastest growing fish in my tank.

I know people say it's too small, but I had a breeding pair in a 20g and there was plenty of room. I had originally 5 juveniles in the tank. As soon as 2 paired off, the others were being kept at one side of the tank. They sure are aggressive little guy's!

make sure you have a lot of caves/hiding places. i had two juwels (a pair) in a 60L, it went fine for a while then the started tearing each other up, ive now moved them into the 700L tank with oscars, frontosas and black belt cichlids (all ten times the juwels size) i had no other place for them! but, they are doing grand, very aggressive little buggers who even chase the oscars away if they get too close to their territory!
