I was browsing the web for betta pictures. I came across some pics which had them in vase's with flowers, is this cruel oh the fish? Also has anyone done this, or know of how it would be done. Ie vase on a vase or let the roots be a habitat for the fish.

Any ideas or info on this subject would be great, as I wouldn't mind trying it.

Thanks dru

Yes, in my opinion it is cruel. Betta's need filteration, room to swim (though granted not quite as much as a lot of other fish), heat and lighting the same as other fish too. Like I said to my sister's 5 min wonder know all friend.......why can ammonia etc poison all other fish but not Bettas?

If you wanna get one then fab they're great fish but seriously not in a vase! :)

A friend of mine had one in a vase on her desk. But it was a really big vase so he had lots of room. They hve these small tray with a hole in the middle that you put the plant in. It keeps the plants on the top then the roots grow down. My friend woud trim the roots every once in a while so it couldnt take o0ver the vase. But she also cleaned the water almost every day too.

It would be easier to have your betta in a tank with filtration and a heater.

Betta Vases are cruel and unusual punishment. They have no heater.. BRRRR Bettas are tropical fish and need heaters. They have no filter, but come with instructions saying to never change the water and just top it off with untreated tap water when it gets low.... ummm can you say dead Betta? They also come with instructions to never feed your fish that they eat algae off the plant roots... Betta are carnivorous fish, they will only eat algae if they are STARVING! Also if the plastic thing the plant is sitting on is not rooted just right, it will end up sitting on the surface of the water which will drown your fish! Bettas breathe air. Please don't buy or gift these arrangements. Bettas are beautiful, but they are not art to stick on your desk or mantle. They need the same care as all other tropical fish do.

Hello! I agree with many others that a vase isn't the ideal place for a Betta. It's simply not enough room for them and no filtration or heater. They need at least an air bubbler to move O2 around so they can breath. I had always admired the pretty Betta vases until I decided to get one and actually did my research first. I was surprised to learn how unkind it actually is. I was also shocked to learn that goldfish in fact should NOT live in a goldfish bowl :/ I can't get over how easily this is always advertised as "normal" or the "ideal". Bettas are very pretty to look at and they do make nice fish, but I would suggest a 3 gallon tank as the smallest. You can find relatively small tanks that come filtered and heated and wouldn't take up much room :)
