My housemate is away for the weekend and asked me to look after their fish while their away. However, when I looked in the tank I couldn't believe how 'ill' all these fish look, especially two tiger barbs. It seems fin rot as completly removed both pectoral fins, its anal fin and lower caudal finlobe. It's so bad the poor fish swims into everything. The other barb is relatively ok (some fin rot) while a platy just leans against the filter the whole time. Question is,how long can we expect a barb to live like this? Is it suffering? Will it recover? I don't particulary get on with the housemate and don't want to spend out on fish treatments (as it won't be appreciated). The tank is filthy (bright green algae covering most things - can anyone id??) and the gravel doesn't look like it has been vacuumed in months. I suggested that she should really get her water tested earlier in the week, but her reasoning for not doing so was she buys her water in from Maidenhead Aquatics.

Anybody have any answers to these questions, or how i should address this issue? If i had it my way I would put the fish in my tank (only a small 30l tank) but the fish would probably die from shock of too much good water lol.

Her tank has been set up for over 2 years and i think 45l?

Thank you:)

good grief, poor fish  how long is she away for? (can you maybe say they died and rehome them?)

I'm not sure I could get away with it. I have nowhere to take them. The other fish all seem fine (no visible problems). i always thought her tank was well kept - she always seemed no know more about fish keeping than i did. she's always had a lot of fish deaths - now we know why lol!

If i were you i would clean the tank (30%) water change daily and apply medication. It is either that or say they died and find someone who will rehome them. Good luck.
