House Fly Maggots

Well as soon as you let your dogs roll in piles of rotting maggot infested roadkill and come trotting in the house i'll listen to what you have to say... oh by the way, in case you didnt know, it's what they do in the wild...

could you say that a bit clearer , i didnt get your point?

I feed my dogs what they would eat in the wild, so I don't see anything wrong with bettas eating the things they would in the wild.

How do you feed domesticated dogs what they would eat in the wild? Domesticated dogs aren't wild animals, so there isn't such thing as "what they eat in the wild." If you mean you feed them like wolves, I'd like to know where you get the money for all those bison, deer, and rabbits! Sorry, I'm being a wise-arse. I think I know what you mean; do you do raw/whole foods diets for your dogs?
And there isn't anything wrong with feeding bettas insects, especially cultured ones. The point I am trying to make is that feeding your bettas some unknown maggots from a filthy old catfood dish isn't particularly safe, since they can be sensitive to bacteria. I didn't think this was a very unreasonable claim, seeing as it was a very unsterile food source and bettas aren't always the hardiest things on earth (especially the VT's - jeeze!). But hey, to each their own.

SERIOUSLY?? lmao furrywabbit, i'm not at all surprised you dont get it.

I find you very offensive and rude.

Yeah, what gives with the unwarranted rudeness? I'm surprised a moderator hasn't scolded you yet for it; there's no reason to be so insulting.

ah, now i doubt you're the first person to tell her that, and i doubt she'll listen to you anymore than she has the rest.

I'm not entirely sure why the catfood was let to get maggoty to begin with, but I suppose there are factors I don't know about there. In any case, I wouldn't suggest feeding them to the bettas for a number of reasons. One, of course, is the foreign bacteria which you would be introducing both externally (in the water) and internally (through ingestion) to your fish. The other is the catfood itself. What's in it? While it may be okay for your cat, it isn't necessarily going to be for your fish, in the same way that the chlorine and chloramine in our tap water aren't a big issue for us, but they kill fish.

also, i don't know about you, but fishing through rancid cat food for some maggots that are filled with rancid cat food sounds horribly distasteful to me ;)

Yea if it were me I wouldnt feed them to my bettas but thats because I have a healthy alternative. If I were you I'd try to raise misquito larvae, just set out some water in a bucket in a shady spot and wait like a week checking every day for the larvae and when you get some, collect them and freeze them and they're ready to eat.

hahahaha, I see mamafish has had a slight case of amnesia and wondered over to the betta section, she is perfectly harmless, but when your done with her, will you please send her on her way back to the cichlid site, she's not too clever so you may have to give her some detailed directions. hahahahaha leave the betta folk alone ya missery guts!!!!! :good:

on another note, my missus has some half moon bettas, and for the sake of a meal, I would not risk feeding the lavea. :)

THEY LOVE ME!!!!

THEY REALLY LOVE ME!!!!

LMAO TONY YOU'RE A PILL!! if they take what i've said for rudeness they dont have a clue and I feel sorry for them. good luck in the real world I say!

I didnt think mama was so much 'rude' until the last comment to furryrabbit. Maybe it's because I get the same way when I think someone is not being smart in what they are saying. I am not saying that whoever she commented to was being stupid. I think she has a point about the dogs rolling in dead animals and such though.

It is true that most living creatures will become immune to certain bacterias if they are exposed to them. But if they are exposed to them at a young age when their immune system is building. I may not be a fish expert, on the contrary I am new at this. But dont feed the maggots to your fish. That is just common sense. If you want to feed something live then buy maggots at the store or culture them yourself, like the majority of the people in this forum are saying.

Just my two cents.

cat saliva actually contains a culture of bacteria that is quite effective at destorying a small rodent's centeral nervous system within an hour, theres no telling what it may do to your fish, i definately wouldn't risk it.

Exactly - that's why cat scratches can get infected easily. Cat licks paw, cat licks dish... if it can kill a rat it can kill a betta. Personally I would just see if you can get some safely cultured live food. :)
