Hi i wonder if anyone can help me.

My girlfriend has a fish tank in her bedroom with 5 chichlids in. With the hot weather recently the temp of the water has gone up to around 28-30 degrees.

Will the fish be ok in this temp, if not, is there anything i can do to cool it down?

Any help would be great

thanks

I can't help I'm afraid, I'm just adding I've noticed the same thing in my tanks, although the fish seem happy enough. Hopefully this heatwave won't last for too long, I'm assuming you are in the UK when I say that. It's great for saving on electricity though because the heaters don't need to do any work :)

Hi there,

I think everyone is in the same boat as you.

When i do a water change i just use pure cold water and pour it in slowly. the fishes seam ok.

You could also freeze a bottle of water then float it in the water.

Keep an eye on them- warmer water carries less oxygen, so if you find them panting at the sirface, this may be a problem. In that case try to use an airstone or anything that breaks the surface of the water.

I would put those ice cubes in a freezer bag and not directly in the tank personally. And ya, a little 80 mill or 120 mill PC style fan on a 12v plug works very well for me, I personally use a 120 mill fan as they push more cfm with less noise. Works very well for me, I have mine blowing across the surface of the water when its real warm and my lights are baking down on the water. But there have been a few days I have had to add a baggy with ice cubes to bring temp down a bit.

Keep curtains closed with windows open.
TANK lights off between 8am and 8pm if possible with general room lights ON. Turning tank lights on in the evenings.
Have a fan on hand and an airstone to keep the surface water moving to keep air flowing.
You can, somewhere online (ill find the link later) buy tank coolers.
Water change more often, providing the water isnt too cold when you fill the tank up again.
Ice bags and bottles are great, and cheap, providing the water in your tank is continualy moving. Otherwise youll have spots of hot and cold water which isnt so good for the fishies.

Apart from that there isnt much you can do. Ill find the link for tank coolers later :)
