Hi. I was thinking of making some decor for my fish tank out of some rocks. I was just wondering if the glue will have any negative affect on my fish or water.

In freshwater it should be fine ( I've been using it for abit now )

I wouldn't use it to support anything structural tho as it may go weak over time :good:

I'm not too sure, but I've read that it's safe, and that it doesn't have any ill effects on the fish...

I have used araldite epoxy before and that worked a treat. I would have thought that would be stronger than hot glue aswell.

milliput is the one to use for sticking rocks togther and is fish safe and cheap.

Where can I find aradite epoxy and/or milliput? I tried looking for aquarium sealant in most places but I couldn't find any.

Also, I remember finding some waterproof sealant at Target yesterday. Would that work?

someone once told me normal superglue is ok as it sets immediately on contact and doesn't release any chemicals...sounds feasible!! i have only ever used aquarium silicone from the LFS!!

hope that helps

L :hyper:

I have seen both araldite and milliput at b&q. They also have araldite at wilkinsons (to save money lol).

I wouldn't use normal superglue as it has cyanide in it. It is also why it isn't a good idea to use to cover wounds on your skin. The risk is low, but in my mind taking that risk is unnecessary.

So called 'aquarium' sealant is the same silicone sealant that can be found in most any hardware store. The one thing I like to look for is sealants without any fungicide or purfumes or similar in it. A lot of the sealants for bathroom use will put fungicide in it to deter mold growth. But, plain silicone sealant will be fine.

Lastly, I'd let it set for about 3 times as long as the bottle says before putting in the tank. If the sealant is liquid in any way, the tank water will get to it and wash it out -- so you want to be sure that it is fully set and solid before putting in the tank.

I have tried the hot glue (craft) and it broke apart at the first tank cleaning. These were just plastic plants glued to a teracota bottom covered in small stones. But it didn't harm the fish. What worked though was the clear silicone II - the one that doesn't have the anti-mildew chemicals. I got some at walmart..it's actually pretty easy to find...it is sold in small tubes...but you do have to hold the structure in place for a while...so crazy glue would be a good thing to use just to put them together then finish with the silicone. The ones I've built with the silicone are still in the tank and haven't come apart once. Good luck!
