I want to get a small tank for quarintine and stuff.

But i called my lfs and apparently a 10gallon with filter and heater is £49+.

Is that normal?

A brand new 10gal with heating and filtration for about £50 is a good deal and will make a very good size tank for a hospital/quarentine or fry tank :good: . How big is your current main community tank?

60L, 15G.

Thanks for the response =]

You probably don't need a quarentine/hospital tank as big as 10gallons, a 5gallon tank would be acceptable, but having a larger quarentine/hospital tank like a 10gal definately has benefets over a smaller one  .

you could try ebay or just a car boot sale, smallish tanks can often be found very cheaply. Although if it isn't new you are going to have to clean it very thoroughly. Unless you have large fish, it seems to me that a small tank is good for a hospital tank because of the cost of meds for dosing a large one and its quick and easy to set up and break down again when not in use.

Turns out the tank was a 5gallon.

Its pretty cool.

Im just wondering, how do you guys go about cycling it? do you cycle it at all? do you use mature media and stick fish straight in?
If its not going to be running all the time what is the best thing to do?

I have a 22 litre tank which included heater and filter from my LFS and it was £49, maybe the same one! It does a marvellous job for a hospital/quarantine tank and is just the job. I did purchase an extra filter though, as its best to over filter a hopital tank! Thats a good deal mate! Its a nice size too!

Thanks =]

I want to keep a fish or two in my hospital tank while it is not really in use as a "hospital", but im not sure what to put in it.

I need something that can be easily moved over to the main tank if a fish got sick and needed the hospital tank.

A small group of fish, that will be okay with platys and neon tetras if they were put in with them, would be good.

The tank is 7 gallons i think, (maybe 10) and the main tank is 60L

So any ideas for my hospital tank?

I recently needed a hospital tank and ended up using a plastic cake box from my kitchen. A 50 watt heater fit in there nicely. It was a fighter fish so it didn't need a filter luckilly. If it's another fish next time, I may buy a small hang on filter. I'm still not 100% sure about cycling. If I buy the hang on filter in advance, I may be able to squeeze some of the filter media from the new filter, into my current filter's casing. If not, I could squeeze my current filter sponge in a jug of tank water, then squeeze the muck into the new filter sponge.

I have 6 neons in my hospital tank at the minute. They are pretty small.

The problem is that the tempreture is very low (23c) even though i have the heater to almost full power.

Ive just cranked it up so it should get to acceptable limits pretty soon.

Im just wondering if i should keep the neons in the hospital tank (to check for illness) for 2 weeks or so, or if i should just add them to the main tank now. The main tank will easily be able to handle the extra bioload plus i will also be able to add the hospital-tank-filter to the main tank, for extra filtration.
Im not overly happy about having neons (even tho they are babies) in a 7 gallon.

Should i keep them there for 2 weeks or move them across?
