When setting up a hospital tank, that needs to be used immediatly whats the best way to transfer some bacteria? I'll be using a drop in filter with no carbon of course just some white filter. I can't take out any filter media from my main tank because I have filter PADS in it, it's a canister. Will transfering half of main tank water do? some gravel, a plastic plant ?

Keep a small internal filter running in your main tank. This then gets moved over to a hospital or quarantine tank as needed.
Or if you have any space in the main filter you can just keep a piece of sponge or floss in there & use this in the hospital tank filter.
Moving water over won't help the bacteria but may help prevent shock when moving a fish for treatment.

Do you mean one of those drop in filters that attaches to an air pump? Will that be enought filtration for a 10 gal. QT or hospital tank? And will that give me enought bacteria from just the filter without adding anything else?

I mean a small powered internal - in England a fluval one or 2 is the usual choice but looking for USA suppliers you have some different options although I found Fluvals here : http://www.drsfostersmith.com/Product/Prod...A&N=2004+113424
This is another ok one;

I have one of these as my back up filter;

which saved having a heater to set up - I just move the entire unit across.

You could use an air driven box or a foam filter - I prefer not having the buzzing of an airpump.

I've just had to set up a small tank myself, I'm being given some fish this monday and I want to quarantine them. I've basically filled it with water from another tank, made a filter like the one in the diy thread using some of the sponge from one of my other (fully mature) filters, a jam jar, pipe and stones and put two fish in the tank to keep it ticking over until monday. I'm monitering the water daily and it's looking good! :good:
