Ive decided to get a hospital / fry tank would it be ok to mix the 2 obviously not at the same time of course but use the tank to treat a sick fish and use it to hold fry. Does it need to have anything in it like substrate or just keep it bare with just a filter and a heater. I was going to keep it going with 2 mollies in it so it will stayed cycled how does this sound??

I am wondering that same thing for a 10 gallon tank.

Also, instead of the 2 mollies, how about you run the filter in the main tank, or you take a filter cartridge from your main tanks filter and put it in your other tanks filter.

Yes you can use it as both, but you will need to sterlise it after a sick fish has been in it, bare bottom, just keep the filter running in the main tank and remove it when you need it.

Why bare bottom? wouldnt this be more stressful for the sick fish, or would that pose a problem for the fry? What should I sterilise it with?

I do not want to have the filter running in either of my tanks as they all have 2 filters on them already and dont want to clutter up the inside with filters so would keeping a couple of mollies in there then moving the to my main tanks as and when needed.

That would be just stressing them out.
Or just take some filter media out of a tank and put it in the filter when needed.

Cant see them getting that stressed as there not going to be in and out every day just once in a while.

 They will livebearers breed like rabbits.

exactly so once fry are in there they can stay there ill move on all but 2 then when the next batch comes along swap them over again get me?

Well i swamped my platies around and they come down with columnaris so you will have to be careful, as moving fish stresses them out.
