I have recently purchased a second hand 30 ish litre tank. Shock horror, the person I bought this tank off of had a clown loach and a rather large yellow gourami in it, poor things. Glad to say my lfs took those on in one of their big tanks!

Anyhow, I am going to buy a new filter for it and probably have running in my 180 litre to mature as I am thinking of having the hospital tank in the kitchen with possibly a couple of minnows in?

I have read the hospital tank info in the emergency section, and see most set up as required, then treat tank and pack away for next time. Does anyone have one running constantly with a couple of smaller fish to keep the bacteria thriving?

My thoughts were, all the years I have owned my larger tank, this is the first time I have had a hospital tank. Most would treat the whole tank anyways, so it wouldn't make much difference having a couple of hardy fish to keep it thriving and end up being dosed with treatment if ever used?

Err I think I have explained what I wanted to say :-/ hope it makes sense, basically am I being selfish for putting 2 fish in it and using as a nice small established set up with a few plants? I mean hopefully I will never need to use it for its main purpose.

Most people don't really care so much for the bacteria, as many medications kill off the bacteria anyways. They just do water changes when needed. The fish are only in there for a week tops anyways, so it's pretty easy to keep up on water changes especially if it's 30 litres.
