Horrible Mistake

I think half of your fish dying will be reminder enough for next time.

Leave your keys or wallet next to the switch or something.

Alarm sounds like the best option so far.

Unplug the telly/kettle/microwave (whatever you use most) at the same time and make sure you don't plug it back in without checking all your fish-tronics are plugged in.

When you unplug it put the wire in the way of the cabinet door (or something else you always tidy before you leave the fish tank), so that when you come to clear up afterwards you can't until you've plugged it back in.

Generally make it so that you can't do something else until you've plugged the filter back in.

I have exactly the same problem when I set up the bread-maker at night, I always used to forget to put something in (though it's less disappointing to wake up to no bread than it is to wake up to no fish :-( ). I haven't as yet found a reliable way of ensuring I remember all the ingredients.

If you come up with something that works please do share it with us and I hope the rest of your fish are doing well. :good:

I have my air stone pump plugged into the same multiway as my filter. You soon notice theres no bubbles, trust me, I know. LOL *memory like a sieve*

Yep, the fridge/freezer is the one you want ;)

I have to ask why you switch the filter off at all though? I never bother switching off the filter, lights, or heater, even when doing 40% changes.

Is the water level getting below the intake for the filter? So long as the impeller doesn't start running dry (and you'll hear it drastically change note if it does), then there's no point unplugging it.

I like the of draping the power lead over the tank if you really must insist on it, although obviously if it goes for a swim you could be in trouble waiting for it to dry. Or each time before you do anything put a note in your sofa seat asking yourself if you've plugged the filter back in.

My filter runs dry as soon as I've taken about 2g out, so I have to turn it off. I wonder if it was one that sticks onto the side with suction cups it couldn't just be placed diagonal or something while you do the water change, to keep it running. I don't know... I hope you find something to help you remember, the price you paid was rather high!

Water level goes well below Juwel filter pump as it's in the highest part of the filter as it draws water upwards and out. Juwel filters are the ones that come with the tank and run the whole height of the tank so can be angled side ways etc. Most pumps dont like being run dry even if the impeller is in the water, water helps cool the pump also the warning in the instructions give a clue :hey: . Pumps on filters add a small amout of heat to the aquarium due the heat generated by the electric current in the motor windings.

Fish died due to ammonia/nitrite build up with effectively poisons them especially ammonia!

Thanks for all the replys, I have decided to use the alarm, plug hanging out of door and note on the sofa approach as I don't want it to ever happen again :good:

...Just to add I am most surprised the all the Rams and some of cardinals survived, catfish yes as they are hardy but the Rams! All the Harlequins bit the dust though.....

All surviving fish eating well and have coloured up again, just watching for any second problem from stress ect.

Yup, mine is a juwel. :) No airstone? It really works!

No airstone as would defeat the object of using carbon dioxide for plant growth. The extra turbulence would mean loss of carbon dioxide out of water.

Sellotape the plug to your forehead.

I personally guarantee you will not forget about it.

But then again, depends on how tired you are.

u gus turn off ur filters and heaters? wen i do a water change i leave everything on............. and every 3-4 weeks take out the whole filter unit put it over the bucket so any od the junk that will come out wen i take out the filter goes in the bucket and change the filters, thats the only time i turn off the filter
