). I haven't as yet found a reliable way of ensuring I remember all the ingredients.
Unplug the telly/kettle/microwave (whatever you use most) at the same time and make sure you don't plug it back in without checking all your fish-tronics are plugged in.

Yep, the fridge/freezer is the one you want
I have to ask why you switch the filter off at all though? I never bother switching off the filter, lights, or heater, even when doing 40% changes.
Is the water level getting below the intake for the filter? So long as the impeller doesn't start running dry (and you'll hear it drastically change note if it does), then there's no point unplugging it.
I like the of draping the power lead over the tank if you really must insist on it, although obviously if it goes for a swim you could be in trouble waiting for it to dry. Or each time before you do anything put a note in your sofa seat asking yourself if you've plugged the filter back in.

. Pumps on filters add a small amout of heat to the aquarium due the heat generated by the electric current in the motor windings.

Water level goes well below Juwel filter pump as it's in the highest part of the filter as it draws water upwards and out. Juwel filters are the ones that come with the tank and run the whole height of the tank so can be angled side ways etc. Most pumps dont like being run dry even if the impeller is in the water, water helps cool the pump also the warning in the instructions give a clue. Fish died due to ammonia/nitrite build up with effectively poisons them especially ammonia!
Thanks for all the replys, I have decided to use the alarm, plug hanging out of door and note on the sofa approach as I don't want it to ever happen again
...Just to add I am most surprised the all the Rams and some of cardinals survived, catfish yes as they are hardy but the Rams! All the Harlequins bit the dust though.....
All surviving fish eating well and have coloured up again, just watching for any second problem from stress ect.
