The small 10 gallon tank I have with a female fiddler crab and 4 male guppies and 2 female guppies I had put some hornwort into it last night because one of the female guppies is about to drop her fry. I was gone for a few hours this afternoon and when I came back the hornwort had dropped all its greenery which is now floating all over in the tank and clogging the filter. I'm trying to get as much of these needle-like "leaves" out of the water but I'm worried about some that I can't get out. What will happen to my water quality if I can't get all the green out??
Maybe this will help someone someday. I thought perhaps someone would have an idea or two for me last night, but no. I put out a plea for a 10 gallon tank on my Freecycle forum and was rewarded. I had a tiny bit of gravel left over from another project and installed that, and I had an undergravel filter just big enough for a goldfish bowl and used that too. I then added some dechlor water, about 4 gallons. From the contaminated tank I siphoned out much of the water and strained it through a nylon stocking to remove the leaves. This water I put in the new tank, and added the fish and crab. They spent the night in the new tank while the old tank was settling back down. This morning I put everyone back in the old tank.
This all started because my guppy had babies! Yikes. I guess the moral is, don't move plants without acclimating them.
