Hey everyone,

I am new at owning and taking care of fish and my aquarium is about 4 weeks old and one of my platys is for sure pregnant and I got her a birthing tank and dont wanna stress her out by having her in it too early. I was wondering if someone could tell me approx. how close my platy is to birth? I know the pic is a bit fuzzy but getting pics of moving fish is quite a mission. I have read soooooo many different things about platy pregnancy stages but they are all somewhat different and so I figured a pic of mine would help. I can see the eyes of the fry's in there (which you cannot see in the pic). I see about 5 eyes in there. Thanks :)

I hope you can see it that way

Hi,
She looks pregnant to me, although not ready to drop.
Have a read of the pinned topic on this subject that will help you to identify exactly when she will drop, but i wouldnt put her in a trap until certain as it will stress her out and cause more problems.
I tend to watch and wait for the first fry before putting them in traps to be certain, and release them asap.

wow that is a pretty colour she is i love it!
she maybe pregnant but has a few more weeks to go.
don't look at the gravid but keep an eye on how big she gets, and if she starts scooting around the tank.
also there will be a white like tube thing suddnely that is a sign she is ready. read 5eady post at the top stickies he explains it clear and good.

Thanks....yeah she is a really pretty colour...sunset platy I think....I also got 2 bala sharks, 2 painted tetras (pink and blue), 2 tiger barbs, 1 green tiger barb, 2 plecos, and 2 other sunset platys besides my pregger one :)

Well she gave birth a couples days after i took that pic and she wasnt in the birthing tank :( she didnt look ready yet, I kept looking for the white spot by her anal fin but nothing....Soo I thought I had lost them all and then today I found one!! Which led to the search of the whole tank and I found another one!! yay!! I thought I saw a 3rd one but searched and searched and cant find him now :( How long do I keep the babies in the birthing tank?? and is there anything they need??

Keep the babies in the birthing tank until the smallest one is too big to fit in any fish mouths, thats the best way to judge it. You can buy special fry food, but i find finely crushed flakes do the job just as well.

Good luck with them!

Ive searched the tank already and moved all the plants and everything....Id love to find more but havnt yet :( i keep looking and looking and its getting depressing lol
