A ways back, I picked up some freshly laid Hoplisoma panda eggs when I spotted my daughter's pandas spawning as I was getting ready to leave after a visit. She wasn't set up to raise them, so I took 9-10 eggs in a vial four hours back to my fishroom. It was an experiment - I hadn't raised any Corys for a few years and I thought that it might be good practice.
It has been.
I've had 9 young panda, about 3/4 of a centimetre in length, in a ten gallon over mixed white and brown play sand. I also have 7 young adult pandas I bought in the early winter. They are growing steadily, and are getting closer and closer to adult size, with some time to go. On a whim today, I scooped up 2 of the pale, well camouflaged babies and put them in with their wandering herd.
Maybe because of the net, the pandas immediately formed a tight defensive shoal. The 2 little ones took cover in the their new 20 gallon home. 2 adults wandered off to feed, while 5 stayed tight, but quiet. Suddenly both babies charged out and joined them.
The adults, being very cool, paid no special attention to them. But the young ones? Within seconds, the black in their panda pattern filled in very strongly. I was really focusing to see them when I realized I didn't need to. In seconds, they had taken on the same level of markings as the young adults they were running with.
Interesting communication there.
