Hi Everyone,

Im new to fish keeping, I have a 260-LTR tank and it has been established roughly 3 months.

Please fire tips and advice this way.

Anything really?

Dos and Donts etc.

Best fish and worst fish??
:good:

DO regular water changes
DO buy a liquid test kit (API master kit seems to be the standard for users on this forum)to check your water stats
DO clean your gravel or other subtrate regularly
DON'T put too much stock in your tank
DON'T leave your lights on 24/7 (causes algae)
DON'T clean your filter media other than rinsing it in old tank water

I guess I can giv a few.

Only use tank water when giving ur filter media a quick rinse.

Don't add too much fish a week (1 or 2)

Puffers are notorious fin nippers better kept alone or with same species.

Overfiltration is good for your tank except for certain fish like Betta I guess, they don't like to much movement in tank.

Don't replace media til its like falling apart and when u do don't replace the entire thing coz u gonna lose a huge colony of beneficial bacteria.

Research ur fish b4 buying them

Im fairly new too but I learned a lot from this site. Hope it helps, they can prolly provide more advice. Good Luck!

DO obey the inch-per-gallon rule until you are quite experienced
DO weekly water changes of between 10% and 50%
DO keep fish such as tetras, corys and rasboras in shoals
DO research all fish you like BEFORE buying them
DO overfilter rather than underfilter
DO perform weekly or fortnightly gravel cleans
DO use water conditioner
DO test your water regulary
DO buy your own liquid test kits for ammonia, nitrites, pH and nitrates
DO stock slowly
DO make sure all your fish will get on well
DO make use of cheap, second hand equipment (Ebay and Freecycle ftw)
DO read this
DO use live plants

DO NOT buy fish that will outgrow your tank, even with the best intentions of upgrading in the future
DO NOT buy fish on impulse unless you know a lot about them beforehand
DO NOT buy a common, gibbiceps or sailfin plec unless you have a 6 foot tank
DO NOT take a shop's word on something - research yourself
DO NOT keep bettas in jars or small tanks (5 gallons is good)
DO NOT assume fish "grow to the size of their tank" (and if they do, it usually kills them eventually)
DO NOT keep goldfish in bowls or any tank under 100 litres for that matter

I've got loads ;) will add more when I think of them!

thats brilliant how about, dont rinse filter sponges outs under the tap, or replace all filter media at one go, i think that list should be up in all fish stores, di

Whether API liquid test kits or any other liquid test kits are better than strips is up for serious debate, has anyone actually done any tests to prove this? We all say that they're more accurate, but is it the feeling of playing with test tubes that makes them seem more accurate? nothing is set in stone, I haven't seen a single scientific test to prove this hypothesis yet.

Saliferts can be bought for the same price or cheaper in the UK, they're more accurate and more consistent so surely it would be sensible to go for the saliferts? I've tested numerous API test kits and the difference in results is shocking.
