Hood Filter Issues

My tank came with a top tray hood filter with a 900lph powerhead but i seem to constantly have issues with it.
 
The powerheads suction is strong and the pipes that the water trickle out of are all clean and free from blockage yet it keeps stopping
 
Does anyone have any ideas why this is happening?
 
Im saving for an external filter at the moment but would like to have this running also.

maybe the filter bag is dirty and needs to be changed... or the motor sucks.. could be gunk in the motor area..
i had the same thing happen to my 20 gallon filter.. it was horrible.. cleaned it and boom worked great for a week then slowly started to slow down and everything was clean.. then started to make noise.. i just chucked it and got a new, different one and it works great.

I had a similar filter setup that I just tossed in the garbage 2 days ago. It would just stop for no apparent reason.
