Homemade Filters...a good thing?

I am hearing that a homemade filter is the best way to go....True?
For example, using a 20 gal tank as a filter for a 55 gal tank. Is a wet/dry filter better? I am looking to have a Reef ready tank with coral and fish.

Well, wet/dry is always a smart optioin when it comes to reef tanks. Im making them for both my tanks, and I only have FW! I find they give perfect biological filtration for less than a filter that wouldnt do nearly as good of a job.

They are not that hard to make. Im currently make a 2 gallon sump for my 20 gallon tank. I wouldnt say they are the best way to go but they are good to have.
