When I got my female I noticed she had a hole in her lower (not sure what it's called) fin.
It hasn't gotten any worse, and I figured it would mend on it's own with better water etc, but now it looks like another might be appearing near it on the same fin.
All of the plants aren't sharp, and there isn't anything sharp in the tank that would've done it (least I don't think there is)....
So what should I do? She's swimming and acting fine.. but the holes are worrying me.

I really don't want to take her out and put her in another tank b/c of the wipeout we're experiencing at the moment (paranoid).

I have tetracycline & maracyn 2 on hand (don't want to use melafix)... if I need to medicate.

Their tank isn't cycled, but I'm doing every other day water changes. Ammonia right now is at 1.0, nitrate is at 5, no nitrite.

Maybe its fin rot? Try and get some medication for that and see how she goes.
Hope she gets better soon!

Gosh I hope not!

Would the holes heal though? Or would they still be there even though there is nothing wrong? I'll start the tank on some medication later today. Gotta get a new syphon and bucket for it since I don't want to risk contaminating it with bugs from the big tank. :X

Im not sure really, I dont know much on it its just that what I thought when I read it.
I would think if it was treated then it would heal up.
Hopefully someone with a bit more knowledge than me will reply to you soon!
Let us know how she goes!

Answer me this... does she flare a lot? Does she constantly have her fins spread, or flare a lot when shes excited about something? More then likely she just blew her fin, nothing to worry about, a bit of salt and some bettafix should close it right up. Blown fins are cause by over flaring, they flare so much they actually tear their fins. Is the hole a near perfect circle? If so I can almost 100% gaurentee she just blew out her fins.

Yeah she does flare a good bit at the male. And holes do appear to be circle. The new one is barely a pinprick in size while the other is slightly older one that's been there since I got her is just slightly larger.
WHEW! Good to know it's probably nothing to be worried about!
Thanks so much everyone!! :good:

maybe stop her from being able to see him, that should stop her damaging the fins. Im sure she'll be fine
