HI all,

A friend of mine has two Comets in a tank which if I had my way, would be put at the back of a garage and a PROPER sized tank bought to replace it. How two Comets are supposed to live in a tank 1.5ft x 1 ft x 15" is beyond me, but she's of the school of thought that "They will only grow to the size of the tank" (I've tried to tell her otherwise, but met with no luck... She'd dug her heels in and nothing I will say can change her mind. Believe me, I've tried.)

But anyway...

Both of her goldfish now have white pits on their heads. Is this 'Hole in the Head' and if so, what can she buy in the UK to treat it?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but HitH is brought on by stress and dodgy water, right? She does have a filter in her tank, but in my humble opinion, it's woefully inadequate. Don't ask me for water stats, she doesn't have a test kit. But she does do regular tank cleanings and water changes. (Mainly coz the water goes brown in about two days flat...)

One of her fish died recently and now the other two (yes, she had three Comets in there!!) have shot up in length. Dunno what the first one died of, but I'd like to try and save the other two until she realises that the only answer is to buy a bigger bloody tank!!

She's an animal lover - before anyone flames her - but she's a misguided re: fish and what they can comfortably grow to size-wise (i.e. naturally and unrestrained!!)

Any suggestions anyone?

Really i think that even if the goldfish survive the HiTH the goldfish will just get sick again at some point soon, in conditions like that its bound to happen. HiTH is commonly brought on by poor water quality conditions and poor diet and the best way to treat it is to sort out these issues. Since the fish are sick, perhaps you can convince her that this is proof that the conditions she is keeping them in are not adequate? Is there anyway you can adopt the fish off her?

HITH can be caused by poor water and poor diet..but interestingly is also caused by internal parasite Heximita. for a med, look for internal antiparasitic with Metronidazole. better conditions would help too as would varying the diet.

cheers
