African cichlids from the same lake systems or bodies of water hybridise regularly, not so much in the wild but more so in captivity. If a fish is the only one of its kind in the tank then I suppose you could use the old saying "any port in a storm"!!!!

This doesn't cause a problem if you are keeping the fish for yourself but it does when people sell these hybrid offspring back to LFS and they are sold on as pure breeds of that species. It damages the genetic line so to speak.

My suggestion to you is keep the holding fish in the main tank and let it spit the fry. If any survive then keep them for yourself and "do not" release them onto the market. If you want to breed these fish then find the fish a partner. But you will also have to consider the consequences of introducing another territorial aggressive male into your existing tank.

hope this is some help.

I have been on the receiving end of hybridised fish from a LFS. It doesn't feel great when you spend good money for a pedigree and you end up with a mongrel. Although some of the mongrels turned out to be stunning.

If it's definately holding then quite obviously someone has taken on the role :/ What else have you got in the tank?
