I'm worried about the fry if/when they hatch because i dont want them getting sucked into the filter  .
the female is one of my zebras (about 2.5 inch) in a 10 gal, the filter isnt huge but its not weak either.

on a side note, how much weight can i put in my 55 gal, i want some more hidey holes for my cichlids.

There are sponges they make to cover the filter inlet, most LFS will carry them. Or you can rubberband an unused (never washed) nylon over the inlet, you'll need to clean it frequently though, as larger debris will get stuck on the outside.

As for rocks, you could easily have 100lbs or more. A lot of people have eggcrate under their substrate to even out the weight, but I have around 130-160lbs in my 75gal w/no eggcrate, never had a problem.

like dthoffsett said you can get sponges from your lfs and if not just use nylon and a rubber band

and yeah you could esaly have 100lbs of rock in a 55 gallon, i would use egg crate to be safe but its not needed

good luck rasing the fry!

Eggcrate first I have he4ard of this very interested u put it under the bottom tank glass? or do you put it under the substrate in the tank? And when U say egg crate you mean the card board box that holds eggs right?

you put egg crate into your tank then cover it in substrate then put your rocks on top of it, it just distributes the weight and makes it a bit safer when putting 100+ pounds of weight in a tank, its also called light diffuser they use it in high rise buildings, they cover the light with it heres a link:
