I have a red wagtail platy pair, and the female is huge. She is off-colour, as if her skin is stretched a bit thin - looks like a yellow/white balloon under the skin or something. I cant see any black area (gravid spot as i think its called)... do you think she could be preggers?

Also, I have a swordtail pair, the female has a black area, kinda half visible... I don't know if it is her innards or a load of baby eyes though! Should you be able to see a black area through her skin if its not baby eyes?

:S

Thanks :)

Don't have a platy (or a sword), but she looks pregnant to me. My guppy females look whiter in that area when they get big with fry. The black spot on the sword is the gravid spot but she isn't particularly fat so not going to drop imminently. You can just see a different colour red in your platy which shows her gravid spot, its just after her white area which is in the same spot as the sword and between her bottom fins.

They do go quiet when they are due to drop fry. Hope someone that has a platy and sword can help you out a bit more

Well, I can say they are both of breeding age? They very well could be preggers, but neither is far along if so.

This is what a preggers Swordtail looks like ;)
