My Blue Tang is bullying my Goby  ! The Tang rousted him out of his regular spot and now the goby is just hanging around. The Goby isn't going for cover so I've rearranged my tank to give him shelter. His fins are all chewed up.

The tang is acting real strange . He's scratching himself on the rocks and hanging out with the cleaner shrimp. He seems really ****** off and won't let any of the other fish slow down, He's just racing from one end of the tank to the other, pestering anyone who slows down.

I am lowering my salinity to 1.021 in the next 24 hours. I started an hour ago and I'm at 1.023. I'll take another 2 qts out in the AM and replace with RO water.

Is there anything else I should do ???
Any advice ???

Thanks- Kim :flex:

the first thing you should do is determine what is
wrong with the tang.. does he have small white spots on him?
the behavior you are describing sounds like ich.

if you have a quarintine or hospital tank, you should put the tang in it
immediately, and if it is ich, begin medicating.

55 gallon is too small im afraid, this will cause stress and eventually aggression and whitespot.

Regal tangs are notorious for catching whitespot. I would start to add garlic suppliments to try and reinforce its immune system. Do you have a UV filter? i would not even consider a tang without a UV backup :*)

I hope it works out for you and the tang has not caught whitespot but the symptoms definately indicate this.

Thanks ! I'll check on the UV. Maybe I should take him back to the LFS, if he needs a home with more room. No white spots, I'm keeping an eye on him.

Tangs need large tanks. Usually 100 gallons minimum. If you want a nice colourful fish that is very active then perhaps a look into Dwarf angels would be better? How about a Coral Beauty or a Bi colour Angel?

I've got a shy Majestic Angel. I'm only able to house 1 angel right?? Any other ideas???

I just took out 2 more qts. and added 2 of RO water. The Tang is still going back, but incase there are any parasites in the tank, I hope it shocks them.

My LFS told me to raise the temp up to 84 deg. along with the salinity drop, but I couldn't bring myself to do both.

Should I ??????

The reason they want you in increase temperature is because the life cycle of the parasite is shortened with higher temperature.

I would not lower the G any further as this is quite a shock to the fish as they have to adjust to this also. At the moment you are within acceptable limits for marine fish (only just) but unfortunately , to lower the SG enough to effect the parasite is going to effect the fish badly, (you probably would have been beter with a freshwater dip over a short period of time rather than lower SG over a long period of time)

Get a UV, start to add garlic to your food, there are many ways to include this in food, i use the Kent Garlic suppliment, others use raw garlic etc.

The best way to fight off Whitespot is healthy fish, if the fish are not stressed and eating healthly then they should be abel to deal with the parasiteon their own.

As a chamical option you could try Octozin, its reef safe and did the job on out outbreak of whitespot i had recently when the UV failed (for the 1st time)
