last sunday i left home to go on a 6 day camping/hiking/white water rafting/rock climbing/canoeing trip, i got back today and my hill stream loach was dead :(

i had my parents take care of my tank while i was gone. i dont know what killed it, but its dead now...

sad day

Probably the fact you were keeping it in a regular overstocked tropical tank and not a subtropical river setup would be my guess. They need very specialist conditions to thrive.

mine has past away about a week ago he was in a subtropical tank gutted now like a dont no what killed mine as well

just to echo what ~T~ said...they are a very demanding fish...not for the beginner or for a bog standard aquarium...hillstream loaches and ottos are one of them fish that should only be kept by experts

Hillstreams "need" a proper subtropical setup, fast flowing waters, essentially you need to mimic a river.

I hope you'll reconsider some of the stocking guidelines you are not following. as people are again bringing them up. and please avoid saying "well he's ok in my tank so it'll be ok in your tank" in reference to a fish many people have told you WILL not be ok in your tank.

i'm sorry for your loss. those hillstream loaches really are interesting and just look so unique. I wanted some myself but i knew it wouldn't work out.

hmm..next up will beeeee...the loaches i'm betting. if the cory doesn't beat them to it.

see the "i had them for a good 5 months" is often times what people on this site are forewarning you about. they know that eventuallly this set up is just not gonna keep him healthy enough. the people here plan expect their fish to last till they have to get rid of them if they want to buy more.

possibly the amount of time the fish will last in less then specific, ideal conditions. I have always liked these but have always refrained as I know I cannot offer the correct environment for them!

I am sorry for your loss it's never nice to lose a fish.

But maybe this gives you the oppertunity to rethink your stocking? I don't want to sound like a nag or a flamer but you really need to re-think your fish and research them before you buy them.

I have to agree with everyone else that they require a specialist very fast flow river bed set up with lots of rock preferably algae covered as it is their main source of food, they also need cooler temperatures although they are not truely coldwater, they are really only suited to a speciese tank.

I too wanted some of these but after researching and finding out the above i decided to wait untill i could provide the right enviroment.

Best of luck with your fish.
