Hikari First Bites

Yes, you can feed baby convicts on Hikari - but because convict fry remain at gravel level, you will need to mix a pinch of the food with a little bit of tank water in a cup, swish it around and then pour it in directly on top of where the fry are situated. Doing it this way helps the food to sink towards the fry quickly, rather than it floating around on the top.

Another option is to just use finely crushed flake food, again mixed with tank water. I've also used Liquifry, too - a white food in liquid form.

If you are intending on rearing the fry then you will have to remove them from the parents after 3 days because Convicts are notorious for eating their fry once they are about 5 days old!! They defend them like crazy for the first few days but end up eating them themselves (especially the male - he's a crafty so-and-so, waits until they've plumped up a bit then...gulp!). You'll see the female will get her orange tummy almost immediately the fry are gone (indicating she's ready for spawning) - and they will begin the whole spawning thing all over again. Mine produce fry every couple of weeks or so!
