There are some discussion on the temperature here. However, I am still confused. I understand that I should keep tropical fishes at 78F. However, temperature was rising in the last week and I don't have AC in the room in which I have aquarium. Temperature is gone past 85F and I cut off all heater/thermostat but still temperature is around 85+. Do you have any suggestion to control the temperature down (other than putting AC in that room or moving aquarium to AC room)?

hi, there are aquarium coolers you can buy, i dont know much about them though since i live in sunny england :)

This might be a pain, but if you want it cooler right now, you could get a water bottle, fill it with water, then freeze it (just make sure theres room for the water to expand) or maybe fill it up with ice... then closethe lid tightly and float it in your tank.... it should cool it down alittle bit, and id do it untill you get the temp down to atleast 80, especially if theres fish in there

Stick a house fan aimed at the surface of the water. Will increase evaporation, which is an endothermic process (takes heat to do).

What's the ambient temperature in the room?

I agree that a fan blowing across the top will help bring the temp down,,,also you can add airstones...a few airstones in combination with a fan will increase evaporation (thus cooling) even more...

thanks..put some ice cube in a ziplock bag and hanged in the top. I estimated that 10G tank would need ~1 kg of ice to reduce temperature by 4F. Not too bad....

Don't use ice. Even though it might decrease the temp a bit, it will rise up again to room temperature very soon and fluctuation in temperature will stress your fish.
The best way to reduce the temperature and keep it low is through a chiller which could cost a few hundred dollars. Or you could attach a little fan at the surface.
Most tropical fish could live in 85F water, the main problem associates with high temperature is reduced oxygen level. Thus you should aim at providing a better water movement at the surface (more oxygen), either through a airstone or a powerhead.
