Hi,

I have a fairly new tank, with a 200W heater for 240 litres, The heater is set to 24 degrees but the thermometer is reading 28.

Its a new thermometer, old fashioned alcohol one which has never been a problem.

Anybody ever had this before, I leave the light on when I go to work which could heat the tank a little, but I would have thought the heater has a thermostat which controls the temperature.

Is there anything which could cause the water to heat or is it likely to be a bad heater or thermometer

Yeah, it's a rather common issue even with a new heater. Many of them are not accurate at all. It's no big deal, just turn the heater down until you get to the desired temp. Even my Eheim Jager heaters had to be calibrated to the precise temp so more expensive means nothing.
