hey everyone... so
my fish tank has been up for about 2 months now
0.5 amonia reading
3.0 ppm nitrite
30 ppm nitrate

it spiked up to a 10.0 nitrite last week (thursday) and i have been doing 20% water changes.

it is on it's way down as i have been doing water changes.. and is there any way to get rid of the cloudy water that seems to love the tank.

thanks in advance for any help.

hi,
the water shouldnt be cloudy after 2 months. did you give the substrate (gravel/sand) a good wash before putting it in

Have you worked out why you got that huge spike in the first place. 10ppm nitrite!!!!!

Were you overstocked?
Were you maintaining things well?
Overfeeding?
Fish death you didn't notice for ages?
:good:

I believe the spike to be caused from giving about ten feeder fish to my two oscars. i think you may be right about the gravel i did wash it out but probably not as good as i should have.

the cloudiness could be bacteria bloom caused by the ammonia and nitrite spike.

unwashed gravel will only cloud the water for a couple days after you put it in. After that, the filter would have grabbed all of the dust up.

You most likely have a bacteria/microbe spike from the high nitrogen levels. Keep doing water changes, and after you get the nitrogen levels in check and it should go away.

I agree. The cloudiness is a bacterial bloom if it is milky (white) cloudy. If your nitrites hit 10.0 AND you are producing nitrates means you are WAY overstocked for this tank. What size tank is it? 1 Oscar needs 55 gallons all by itself. 2 would need a 75 at MINIMUM preferably 90 or better.

I have kept oscars before. I grew one from 2 inches to 14 inches in a 55 gallon. 55 was too small for him.

yeah what size is the tank, oscars need at least 75 gallons for each oscar.
