I learned about these just recently :). I always noticed that tube TVs' make that weird ringing noise, but I never really knew why. We just started learning about hearing in my Psychology class when some one mentioned these. Then the teacher put one on her computer and started randomly playing it :hyper: . She says she can barely hear it, but the reaction of the class is so funny  . Some people are not bothered by it, but some just can't stand it. Here is a link with various different frequencies, How high can you hear?

cheers,

oh dear.... all them laght nights at noisy partys and raves have done damage......

According to that list i cant even hear 14.1khz which says you can hear till 49.... I'm only 29 now :(

I can only get to 12khz. But I was born deaf!
They are cool. I want them on my phone. Ilike annoying people at work with stuff like that.

As some of you might not have figured out yet, it depends on how loud you turn up your speakers. When I had my speakers on first I had them pretty quiet and didn't get past 14.9 khz. After turning the speaker up a fair bit (to about how loud I usually listen to Pete's Pond cam) I could hear until 21.1 khz. I haven't checked how loud I have to turn up my speakers to still hear 22.4 khz as my other half is working right next to me and got annoyed.

I guess you can't really test this unless you download it, stick it on your phone as a ring tone and turn the ring tone volume up as far as it will go.

Can any youngsters confirm that there is actually a tone for 22.4Khz :) ? I can here all the rest but cant hear that one at all, even with headphones on and the volume at max.

If there is that next time my nephews come round I'm going to have to have it playing on a loop with my speakers at max :)

Im 21 And cant hear the 22.4khz
I'm classed as young I hope.....

Those are not fundamental frequnecies. They consist of many frequencies or harmonics, which is why you can hear them. Range of human hearing is from 20Hz to 20,000Hz. I know for sure that I cannot hear >18KHz.

I can actually really here the 15.8khz (30 & Younger) - I can hear a peep after that but it sounds lower so I figure I am just hearing the speakers protesting.

I asked Dan to check, he can not hear the 15.8khz but he can hear the 16.7khz - hears it the same as I do, so we think that's just speaker noise from that point up.

I can honestly say I bottom out at 15.8 but that's ok since I am 37 :)

However, do be careful with this high level sound, you might think you can't hear it, but it's going in your ear and you will find that after playing with them for a while, your ears hurt or feel hot. Watch the volume too as you can cause damage.

I could hear right up to 19.8 though i really wish i couldnt, was like having a drill put through my ear drum  but thats not bad since i'm 30 and a construction worker. I've always had the odd abbilty to hear high frequency sounds, when i was younger the sound of bats used to almost drive me almost to tears when night fishing where there were a lot of them and recently i was driven nuts by a noise that no one else could hear while putting a fence up in a neighbours garden, turned out to be their cat/fox scarer which emited an ultra sonic peep noise when i eventually tracked the noise down.

I think I might be able to hear higher, but I don't think the computer is capable of playing them. I could always hear very high pitches notes, I can often walk past houses and tell if their TV's are on by the whistle - always been able to hear the TV come on in any room before it starts "speaking".

Also, can turn street lights off....thought I was alone in that one for many years before I found a club, lol, there's a club for everything, I should have known that.

I can hear all of them but I am 13. I have the highest one on my phone and its funny when it rings in class and all the students turn around but the teacher keeps talking. :D

....so then what do you do though? she can hear you talking even if she doesn't hear it ring, so you can't actually answer a call without her knowing.

I think it would be useful only for an incoming text, but you can always have it on silent and vibrate for that, that's what we all do at work anyway, just don't forget and leave it laying on the desk or it starts going brrrr brrrr and wandering around by itself, a sure giveaway that the phone is on...

Am I missing the point of this ringtone or do you all suddenly ask to go to the bathroom once you hear the highpeep?
