Hi all,

My tank is now 6 weeks old. After initial high nitrates and nitrites which have now settled down. I'm having problems reducing the ammonia again, getting a consistant yellow reading from tests (Hagen test kit). any suggestions feeding isn't heavy, every other day. But I do have to feed the fish and my blue crayfish seperately (eat different foods).

Also getting brown algae on plants, ornaments and a little on glass. Having to clean plants once a week. Would an algae eater help reduce this? If so which one would you recommend.

Thanks for you help, this has probably been posted in the wrong section and will get moved!! Soz

Hi flash
your tank is cycling this may help you
http://www.fishforums.net/index.php?showtopic=10099

the brown algea is actually diatoms and is not a problem, just unsightly
diatoms can be removed by increasing the light, either adding more light or keeping the current light on for longer.
If you wish Otocinculs will eat the diatom but they need a mature tank to live in so wait untill the tank has finished cycling before adding them.

HTH

Thanks Wolf

The tank did appear to finish its cycle when the nitrites finally zeroed. Is it common for Ammonia to peak again?

It's not common but can happen.
