hey all i have a colony of Blue Cobalt Cichlid (Maylandia callainos), when i stand back from them they swim around like nothing wrong but when i come up close to the tank they all hide in the rocks, atm i dont have a test kit so i dont know if there is a water problem or is it just becuase they are new and have came from someone who used rain water and now they are in town water....and my town water is no good???

If they are new they could be adjusting to you and your surroundings, I only got my Demasoni yday and there still a bit figity but the rest of my MBUNA handfeed, I think when change happens they might get a little scared....

Try and get a test kit though as testing water never hurts

Like Ace of Spades said, when new, mbuna tend to hide when you are near the tank. Once you do rule out any water quality problems, I'd start getting them used to you being there. I've found sitting motionless in front of the tank for 10 min or so a couple of times a day works. And once they're used to that you can start incorporating slow movements, eventually they'll just start ignoring you and going about their way. It also helps when they figure out you = food.

thanks alot guys!

im just wondering how long it takes for them to adjust to a new surrounding?

my colony of Maigano`s didnt hide on me at all....seems abit weird

I've had my tank set up and fish in for a couple months and there always seemed to be a couple that were still kinda nervous...Then my son went fishing with the fish net and they were all nervous for about a day. (yes he got in huge troube...he's 5 and knows better.) but anyway, there always seemed to be 1 or 2 out of my 17 that were a little nervous.
