I have a newly established (a few months old) 30L tank with 4 guppies in it, two adults, and two younger guppies (not sure how old they are, they're about a third of the size of the adults), they're all male.

One of the younger guppies has been hiding at the back of the tank, behind some plants and kind of half under the powerhead. He comes out for feeding, and eats as enthusiastically as ever, but once he's eaten he goes straight back behind the filter. From what I can see of him, he looks healthy.

One of the adult guppies also has a bit of redness around his mouth, but it seems to be coming and going. (He's to speedy to get a really good look at.) He's eating, and behaving normally.

Is this anything I need to be worried about? If so, what is it/what can I do?

Thanks :)

Well its not your water conditions, they are pretty much perfect for guppys. Is the tank well oxygenated? With all males it is likely the smaller males are getting bullied and therefore heading for cover. What filtration are you using?

Sounds like the normal survival tactics of young guppy fry to me. If there are larger fish around he may feel a bit vulnerable so hiding away until he's grown a bit more. I see this happening all the time whenever there are guppy fry in my tanks. The top or back of the filter is a favourite hidey place with mine.

Hopefully you're right. He's been in the tank for a few weeks now and he's only just started hiding. But I did notice he was getting chased a lot last week.

I have an under gravel filter, with the outlet sitting just at water level. I can't have it above the water line because the tanks in my bedroom and the running water at night makes me need to pee, lol.
I think the water level is over the outlet at the moment, so I'll move it up a bit and see how it goes. Ta :)

seeing as they are all males he might be getting challenged now he is getting older , by the others as males living together can get aggresive and he could be hiding as thats where he feels safe and can hide from the other males
my guppies get a little red around their mouths from digging around in the gravel (even though it's not sharp gravel)
Have you got gravel in your tank ?
cos that might be an answer

take care and good luck

It never occurred to me it could be him digging in gravel, lol. I lost all my guppies in the tank a few months ago, so I think I've gone into full blown over protectiveness and paranoia with these guys.

I'm going to get some more plants for the tank tomorrow, just so he's got a few more hiding places :)

yeah get him some more hiding places and he might venture out more knowing he only got to go a little way before he's safe :)
