Evenin, inherited a couple of fish a while back. Wasn't all that fussed at the time, kids were exited etc.

Well the inevitable happend and they are now mine and the wife's, started to get aquainted with the 'little buggers' as they are nicknamed due to them being a couple of bug eyed goldfish, still can't tell you their fancy name.

Long story short the original owner, a neighbour has a large tank (600l) and he stated moving towards tropical fish and these two would become fish food to the more aggressive fish he wanted.

Waited till he was due a water change then we transfered his water into an old 2ft x 1ft x 1ft tank he had and they became ours. Over the last 3-4 months we have learned a few things, upgraded the pump and feel quite good about it now to the point that me and the wife fancy a bigger tank.

To that end we will want/need more fish, there is a spot begging for the tank as a center piece to our living/dining room and something around 3-4 ft long by a ft square would be ideal, maybe taller, not more than 200 litres really for weight reasons.

Anyway thats my story, married in northants with a couple of kids. Probably irritate you with all manner of silly questions for which i appologise. The first of which will be what to look for in a second hand tank...?

welcome....look on facebooks local pages..think we all have them...items for sale in.....
this is where i got all 3 of my 2nd hand tanks
66L for £20 (including stand)
70L for £40 (including filter, heater, sand substrate and sunken bell)
60L for £20 (including filter and gravel substrate and an airstone)

this has allowed us to spend alot more for the bits and bobs for the tanks..guess with second hand its trial and error...and some prefer new tanks..but i just feel having a second hand tank, is like giving it a new home and its been broken in..(as it were).

Good Luck on your new hobby xx :good:

Thanks for the welcome, have been going through the site since i found it and oh cripes am i way off the pace, cycling, water testing sweet mummy what a minefield.

I'm almost shocked the fish have survived. I think its just luck, we used water from the original tank and a filter/pump that had been run in the water before we took them on. I can only think that has seen them right. Steve has been popping in to see how were doing too so maybe we have a knack, maybe a feeling for what they need who knows.

The bigger tank will be properly planned now, obviously need to find it first. We have setteled on 4ft x 1 x 1 or near as, and something natural looking, no sunken plastic boats and skulls blowing bubbles :X . With some greenery.

After the posts i have read that is probably 12 months in the making?

Anyho, i'll be after a water testing kit for starters and on from there

It shouldn't take you a year to get and set up a larger aquarium. First of all, cycling is what takes the longest, in my opinion. If I read your post right, you are using a filter that is already cycled, right? You can just transfer that over to your new tank. Or use some of the media in the new filter. The rest will take as long as you want it to. I've been planning a 75 gallon tank for two years now and I don't even have the tank. The filter is all ready(all cycled. running on my 46 gallon) and I have everything I need, except the tank and stand. After the cycling, it's all up to you on how long it will take. Great job so far!! :good:
