Hi my names joe and i have just started fish keeping as i am 14 years old and have been wasting my life by not keeping :fish: for the past few years

I have already got a 24*15*18 inches community tank and i have just bought a jewel rekord 96 tank with filter heater light for 50 pound. So far i have spents 80 pound on the rekord tank and 200 pound on the community tank. I am planning on keeping mbunas in the tank. I have a tufa rock cave setup and i am getting my fish on thursday. I am planning on getting 2 female and 1 male labeotropheus trewavassae, 2 female and i male Labidochromis caeruleus, 2 female 1 male Pseudotropheus elongatus and 2 female 1 male Pseudotropheus saulosi. If you have any tips or pointers i would be grateful if yu could share them with me thanks

Hi joe and welcome.I know nothing about cichlids but if you post your question in the african cichlid section one of the mbuna experts will probably answer your questiona as there is a chance it may get overlooked here

Hello and welcome to the forum. :hi:

Good luck with the new tank. As Weaver said, try the African or New World Cichlid sections to get the info you need.

Hi Joe, I'm assuming you have the Mbunas in the 96?
If I'm not mistaken, that tank is about 26 Gallons.
I think that currently, the tank you are planning on is a bit over over stocked.
Af. Cichld tanks are always over stocked, and that is to even out agression, so its a good thing its over stocked. But there is a time, when Its Too over stocked.
I'd suggest just a few of those fish, maybe 3 or 4 of them.

Your tank is only 24 inches wide, making it far from ideal for mbuna, unfortunately. You can still try to make it work, but the best way is to stock only 2 species, about 4 of each (or even better, make it a single species tank). With most species it's very risky regardless, unless species are chosen very carefully. Lab Caeruleus will work in this tank. Saulosi are especially good since they're not too aggressive and they're small - I'd do about 8 of them and call it a day.

It's not a good idea to mix the Elongatus with the Saulosi - fish that look too similar always increases aggression, and you'll have enough on your hands without this addition - just chooose one.
