Hi Newbie

Good luck with your fishless cycle, you seem to be doing good :good:

By the way,do you have zeolite pods in your filter? ,if so i would take them out,has they will interfere with your cycle...

my filter did have the zeolite pods in and the ammonia was dropping out at a ridiculous rate. after a bit of research I found the the pods could be prised open, so I did that and emptied them then filled them with mature media from another tank! thanks for the advice any way

update on the tank while I am here, it was reading 1ppm of ammonia this evening so have added my second dose tonight it took 4 days in total for the first drop so moving along nicely!!

another little update, tanks moving along nicely now. the ammonia is taking around the 24 hour mark to drop from 4ppm back down to under the 1ppm mark. also just checked my nitrite reading and that is up at 5ppm so very much present. few more days for the ammonia to be doing what it should then just a waiting game on the nitrite.

found out the other day that a friend of mine has just inherited around 40 baby platy so will start with a few of these once the tank is ready!

blimey this takes some patience lol.

the ammonia is now sorted dropping from 4-5ppm down to 0 in around twelve hours, nitrite is still of the chart goes purple s soon as the drops go in. but on the plus side my nitrate has shot up now a well so must be getting there... at a snails pace!

You're getting there! Any ideas on stock yet?

keep changing my mind so just a well its not ready yet really!

I found a fish stock calculator through here last week that was giving me a good idea of what I can and cant get to live together happily but cant find it again now.

really like the idea of the dwarf puffer fish but understand that there isn't much they will live with (without trying to swallow) and have been told even though the tank will be cycled they prefer a mature tank.

lots of decisions to make.

got a 3d background on order but don't know if I am going to be able to get it in now the tank is set up, am guessing I was supposed to do it before the water and gravel went in.

this is mine so far, going to add some more plants before I get some stock.

the stingray filter came with the tank so am using that for the time being but a friend of mine is downsizing soon and giving me an external fluval pump that was for his 120 litre tank. will have to run two for a while when I change over but should be worth it!

hi after a bit more help and advice.
basically i have followed the fishless cycle guide and results have moved along very quickly my ammonia only took 4-5 days to drop initially then after a couple of weeks the nitrites went off the chart and didnt seem to drop at all until last Saturday when i tested the tank 24 hours after adding ammonia and the nitrite reading was zero. by Tuesday evenings dose of ammonia the nitrite has been dropping in the twelve hour slot so i have had around 10 doses of ammonia drop to zero ammonia and zero nitrites within the 12 hour slot.

question is has it happened to quickly? and should I wait more from reading other peoples guides it seems that it has finished a lot earlier than other set-ups on here.

was planning on going to pick up some fish today but thought id ask opinions on here first. the tank had a 90% water change last night and another dose of ammonia to keep it going. having just tested levels again its at zero ammonia zero nitrite and 20 ppm nitrates. am i right in thinking a small change this morning for a fresh start nitrate wise then its ready to go?

cycling takes different amounts of time for everyone no one person has the same cycle you may have just got very lucky :)

what people generally do is do a 'qualifying week' where you keep dosing the ammonia to make sure there are no more spikes and that all water parameters are stable then you can add away! :)

well i took the plunge and got some stock for my tank yesterday morning. the tank had been consistently dealing with the ammonia for 5-6 days (11 doses).

I went and had a chat at my lfs they were very impressed with the cycle and their only concern was the breaking down of actual solids in the tank but said in some ways its better to physically remove it with a gravel vac anyway, as I am new to fish keeping I was advised that live bearers are a good place to start,I came away with four silver mollys 2 male and 2 female and initially 4 red and black platy they were all male and getting along fine at the shop so took a risk but once settled at home they started showing signs of aggression so I nipped back earlier and grabbed a couple of females. done the job instantly, all getting along swimmingly and more importantly my water tests after 30 hours with fish in were spot on. ammonia and nitrites both spot on zero and nitrates at 20 so tanks working very well.

think that's my tank fully stocked now as its only a 60 litre. but will have a read up as I was hoping to add a couple of small loaches at a later date.

thanks again for all your help will be sure to stick around!!
