Hi My First Post

and my first ever clown loach, i got a bit of a snail problem and i always wanted a clown loach so i thought i could kill 2 birds with one stone

I guess you don't know that clown loach will not usually do well on their own, they will most likely hide for long periods and can even fade away without the company of their own kind, They shouldn't be kept alone and ideally should be kept in groups.

oh i didnt know they needed to be kept in groups, the guy at my LFS said they would be fine on their own just more active if i had a pair. i dont want to over stock my tank so if i was to get another clown loach tomorrow from the same tank i got my one from would they pair up ok?

my residents are currently

2 x krib
2 x syno (eupterus)
3 x neon tetras
6 x glowlight tetras
angel
clown loach

i got a 4x2x2 tank so how much room do i have left for fish?

your tank is 120US Gallons so you have room for 1 or 2 mor clown loach and a few other species, What other fish are you thinking of adding?
Also just a word or warning the angel is likely to one day eat your neons and glowlights if they are small enough to fit in its mouth.

the angel is a juvinile the neons are still a bit big for it, im only gonna get another couple of clown loaches i think.

i sounded a bit stupid in my last post i know the general number of fish to a tank rule but i got a lot of rocks and other decor and i wouldnt know how to compensate for them in volume

picking up the 4ft tomorrow the guy i got it from has kindly given me 2 fluval 3 filters they should be enough to keep the tank clean.
Not for long, you really need an oversized external with tonnes of biological filteration on a goldfish tank.
My schools tank had 2 fluval 4+ on it with 2 regular and 2 smaller fancy goldfish in a 4 foot tank. Just wasnt enough biological filteration, water would go cloudy and nitrites were always up. Would be OK when they are small, but an upgrade will be needed at some point not too far in the future.

Lovely angel, though ditto about the clown loach, if you are getting a 6x5x4 you should get at least a few more clown loaches :good: .

I don't think you need to worry really, IMO you are way below the level of stocking you could put into the tank,

As a really basic guide if you consider that each of the following uses up the allocated amount of volume in your tank, i would say that another 40G worth of fish could be added without ill effects.

2 x krib - 10G
2 x syno (eupterus) - 30G
3 x neon tetras and 6 x glowlight tetras - 10G
angel - 15G
clown loach - 15G
= 80USG

A Larger shoal of tetras or a pair of rams or a smaller plec such as a bristlenose or bulldog could be easily added to your current stocking without causing overcrowding to your other fish.

im gonna get another clown loach tomorrow then stop buying till i get my 6ft'r.
thanks for all the info i would have hate to have made my clown loach suffer.

davo86 said clown loaches should be kept in groups so would 2 not be enough? in the LFS there was about 20 of them in the tank i think at a push i could get another 2 if needed.

little update

i havnt managed to get my hands on any more clown loach looks like tuseday will be the soon'est
i started setting up the 4ft for the gold's and then my neon tube broke i disconnected it to give it a clean and the metal end got stuck in the adapter and it made a hissing noise i got kind of scared!

oh my female krib has been hiding in a little cave all day i assumed they finally did the dirty but the male has found himself his own little cave on the otherside of the tank? i thought the male kept guard while she layed her eggs and did het thing? the only thing i can think of is she told him to lay low so she can tell the council she is on her own and get a flat and claim benefits?

ROFL, it sounds like your kribs aren't a pair after all or at least not yet, only thing you can do is to give them time, they'll either pair off or try and kill each other eventually so you'll know either way.

clown loach are shy and retiring fish which need companionship of their own kind in order to bring them out the confidence in them so to speak. 2 is the absolute minimum number that should ever be kept but ideally the more the better really.

im really worride about my krib now, one min they are swimming around together and doing their wiggle, the next they are on opposite sides of the tank, the female was in the little cave again for about 15 mins and the male was just there at the entrance then they both just left again. now the male is in the pot and the female is behind the rocks. would it be wise if i got another female or another male and female?

As long as thay are not being overly aggressive towards one another i would leave them be, They may simply be young fish.
I wouldn't add any more kribs, This will just increase the levels of aggression shown by your current two
