I'm not sure what two of them are but they have very round leaves sort of shaped like a tear drop........was in with the Java Fern but didn't really look "ferny". They are fairly large and very hardy looking...........anyone know what they may be???? Or where I could find out?? They didn't come in any small pots or anything.......just bare roots!! :X

The other plant I got is labeled as Water Sprite.....Ceratopteris thalictroides!!! It is sort of whispy looking, really soft to the touch.......anyone know about this one?? It came in a pot and I can't burry it in my gravel because the pot is too big....well....it's still a tiny pot, but in an aquarium its kind of big....well........ ......get it??? How do I plant that one......do I take it out of the pot and burry it, or do I try and burry the whole pot!!! :*)

My first real plants.......what can I say...........heh.....heh!! :*)

Go ahead and remove them from the pot, although sometimes it takes a little work especially with that the roots being in the rock wool. You'll probably find that there's more than one plant in there, which will also give you more flexibility when deciding where to put your plants.

Silver, do your unknown plants look like this?

If so, that's commonly called moneywort. Fairly common stem plant, low light requirements, pretty easy to maintain and grow (as is the watersprite, btw).

Sheesh, I forgot I posted this.........DUH!!!

Sorry! :*)

But, no it doesn't look like that it looks like this and is quite large:

You can see that on the one leaf, there is another step growing out of it that had roots on it so I plucked it off and planted it in another tank and it's growing fine!! :dunno:

From that sketch, I'd want to say it's probably a brazilian or amazon sword -- but as far as I know, swords don't grow new plants on their leaves; however, java ferns do.

Does the plant have a rhizome near the bottom, like the one in this picture?

Or, does it look more like a 'regular' potted plant, perhaps like one of these swords?

If you have a rosette plant wich also has a "stalk" with small plants on it, as your drawing suggests, you probably have a sword with a "runner".

Many Swords grow a "runner" from which new plants appear at intervals. Normally it runs parallel to the substrate, but in loose substrates it often floats upwards as the new plantlets are buoyant.

Its DEFINITLEY the melon sword!!!!

No doubt about it!!! The only difference from this picture is that my plant's leaves are even BIGGER!! :kana: :*)

Thanks a ton Bol and LL!! Now I know at least how to treat it and what it's requirements are!!!

This thread is a perfect example of how awesome this forum is! How nice that we have somewhere to go that contains so much knowledge for all our aquarium needs. I see this all the time, but this post in particular, just made me smile that people went out of their way to make sure the mystery was solved and we all win! :D
