what books do you suggest i should buy to know as much as i can about them? i have tried amazon.co.uk but they seem not to have any on specific species though :/

Why not ask someone on the forum?

Jewels usually range from 4-6" (Depends on species), and are aggressive (Very very aggressive when breeding) . They are afircan river cichlids, so their water requirements should be similar to those of New world cichlids (Neutral-soft pH, around 78 degrees) A 30" is the bare minimum, because these fish need space for territory. If you have a large enough tank, they can be kept with medium sized new world cichlids, ours lives in a 29g high with a few rainbow cichlids, and he is doing pretty well :)

We feed our jewel cichlid sticks and shrimp pellets, he is a 6", 7 year old male :D

IMO, getting information from individuals is better than getting it from a book, because you can't ask books questions ;)

Hope that helped :D

You forgot to mention the rainbows are going and this a temporary situation , the tank is rather small for the group of fish . :p

The Jewel fish in the pic is mine :)

You should just ask the pet store, or go to a home owned pet store and ask the workers there, they should know a lot.

Many books out there are garbage, true, but if you can find a good one like Ad Konings has for many African rift lake varieties then they can be quite helpful and informative. The good ones are not on a rack by the LFS entrance being sold for five or ten bucks, I'll put it that way.

I quiver when people say things like 'who needs books'. Boy can I go off on that one.

Ask the pet store employee - err... thanks, but I think I'll play my odds and figure it out myself - I've seen the vast wisdom of these guys.
