im buying a small tank for my girlfriends little brother for his birthday

he wanted goldfish but imo a betta would suit a small tank better then a goldfish will plus its better looking and cleaner

my question what would the right water temp be?

and its likeley to only be a 14l tank could i house anything else or its this just bare minimum for 1 betta

cheers

14 litres is really not enough room at all , certainly too small for the bare minimum as a permanent home for betta. Get a 5 gallon. It can fit on a desk, will be easier to keep stable in terms of water chemistry and is easier to outfit with a heater and sponge filter. If you want tankmates then no less than a 10 gallon is best.

And no, goldfish will not be suitable for either of those sizes. They grow to around 12 inches long , can live for over 30 years and need 55 gallons per pair ( a 4-5 foot tank ) along with external filtration ect.

I feel that 14 litres is plenty adequate. That is of course, providing you do adequate water changes and keep a stable temp. (assuming this boy is young, I hope you and your g/f can help guide him).
Definitely not with anything else though... As the above poster said, anything less than 10 gallons should really house only 1 fish.
Definitely stay away from goldfish, they are extremely dirty fish.

Also, I keep a temp of about 78, and that seems to be where they thrive most.
I'm sure you can find a really beautiful betta that he will love!
