I just had to share my excitement. :p I bought an awesome orange/black Hi-Fin female last summer, and I'be never gotten any Hi-Fin fry. I've raised numerous batches from the tank she's in with a wagtail, but they've all been wagtails. Finally, though, I glanced in there today and one of the babies is devloping a Hi-Fin! (These are the same babies I have in my fry log topic, so you can see they weren't showing it all the time) Just one is showing it, but the other one is slightly smaller and I think s/he is definitely going in that direction. I'm so excited. :hyper:

I had to race out of the house again, because as some of you may know, I'm going between two people's houses who have cancer, so no pictures yet. I'll be home this weekend though, so I'll try to get some then. :)

Thats really great
Looking forward to the pictures :)

Thanks guys! :D

I will work on getting those pictures when I get back. My camera is being funky, so I'll have to mess with that too. The finnage difference is very subtle though, I warn you, so don't expect something spectacular. It IS cute though.

Congrats on the high fins!

Hope you are well and that everyone is comfortable!

I just gave spooks some of my sunset platy fry! They don't like to be caught at all talk about being stuborn! Oh well more fry on the way! I've not really seen any hi fin platies around my LFS so it will be interesting to see yours!

Quick question ne of my female platies has a small hole in her dorsal fin she has had it since I got her and it hasn't grown or changed in anyway should I be worried about it? She is otherwise perfectly healthy and is about to drop her second lot of fry in the next week or so, would this defect in her be passed to her fry?

Sorry for hijacking the thread but I thought it easier to ask you on yours than to post a new topic!

Thanks Natsuko. :D I will definitely work on those pictures soon.

As for your female, it shouldn't. If it was an injury, that definitely won't be passed on. If it's a split, or something similar...I don't think it would be passed on, because you have the male's genes in there, but it would depend what dominates. I wouldn't expect many, if any to have that though. :)

Thanks thats put my mind to rest! It looks like a needle has passed through her dorsal fin but it doesnt seem to heal at all which is what made me wonder as to what it was!

I can't wait to get a decent camera so that I can get some pics of mine to show you! My platies colours seem to be getting deeper each day that goes by and my fry well they're just plain cheeky!

I can't wait to see your pics but don't rush I know how busy you are at the moment!

One of my females had that too. As far as I know, it never passed on to any of her fry. They were doing survival of the fittest, but the fittest ones didn't have it, I know that.

That's great about your Platies, they must be very healthy and happy.

Thanks! I think its the regular live foods that is helping them to stay happy! :D

I wonder what causes the holes in the dorsal fin its very peculiar oh well at least it makes it easier to tell her apart from the other female! My fry which should be on the way any day now are about to do survival of the fittest! So far I dont have a single fry in the tank even the last one has disappeared but it wasnt a suprise really!

What do you feed your adult platies on? mine get flake, live daphnia & bloodworms, peas, freeze dried tubifex at the moment oh and as of last night sweetcorn which they enjoyed just as much as the peas

Anna, Congrats on the fry, meant to write that last night but kept going back and forth b/w my thread and checkin on the fish...Anyway, I'm so jealous of you guys, I can't wait to have my fry!! :D Also, survival of the fittest I take it means birth in the community tank right?? I think that's how it will be when I get a big tank...except for maybe 2 generations as I want a group of my sunset wag tail platys, and a group of the high fin blue mm platys...once I have a nice batch of those fish they can do whatever they want in the big tank :) Natsuko, have you seen any of my pics posted on here? My cam is the same way...It's a cheapy american camera from like few years ago and is huge...I really should have bought a Fuji Fine Pix or somethign like that last time i was on vacation in Japan :( They have the best electronics everytime I'm there....I think that's what kinda made posting my cories in the catfish section fun...Ok who can tell what cory this is by the blurry loch ness monster pic i have posted lol

Natsuko ~ Frozen Brine Shrimp, Bloodworms, Daphnia and Algae mix, freeze-dried Brine Shrimp, Krill, and Bloodworms, Flakes, Flakes with Tubifex, various veggies, sometimes some extra small pieces of meat, and occasionally some live foods my LFS gets in. They are spoiled to death. :X

NP ~ Thanks. :) Survival of the fittest means not taking them out or doing anything special. It doesn't have to be in a community tank, it could be in a species tank, but it generally does mean community since that's what most people have. The tank these fry are in have the Platies, 2 Dwarf Loaches and a very sweet Betta. Hopefully you will get Hi-Fins, cross your fingers the genetics will go the right way. This is the first batch of Hi-Fins I've gotten, all others from her have been Rainbow Platy normal ones.
