I just wanted to say hello. I've posted once or twice already (I usually manage to put the cart before the horse,) but I suppose it's time to say hello.
This looks like a terrific place! Thanks in advance for your assistance!
I've been gifted with a 90 gallon aquarium and stand, and I've just moved into a location where I have my own well - soft, acidic water - so I'm going to try with discus fish.
I've had aquariums for the last 15 years, mostly dwarf cichlids and bogwood and lots of plants. They've all used undergravel filters w/hang-on-back power filters, just soooo easy to maintain. The canister filter & sand substrate I'm planning for the discus (what? no vacuuming???) are a new experience for me - I do appreciate your patience and advice!
I had discus fish when I lived in Dallas, but the water was hard and I seemed to spend all my time softening it and worrying about the fish - who incidentally flourished. After a few hectic months I took my healthy and larger discus back to the petshop for a swap - they gave me almost twice what I'd paid, so that was good. However, none of my fish since has lived up to those three discus. So here I am, going to try it again under better conditions. Wish me luck!
When I'm not "fishing", I'm usually playing with my 2 Australian shepherd dogs (my kids) - anybody else out there have Aussies? Aren't they the best?
Take care!
Leslie
