Hi everyone, ive just set up a new tank, i used to keep fish 10years ago but have forgoton alot. I started with a plec, siamesse fighter and 6 neons, then my wife bought 2 male and 3 female guppies. I had a feeling there would be trouble, both males were fin nipped and attacked by the fighter. they have both since died, im wondering weather it would be a waste of money if i replaced the males? thanks for any help.....

Alot of male bettas see any other fish with flowing fins, like a male fancy guppy, as the enemy. If your male betta has already killed male guppies it is a pretty sure bet that he will attack any others you put in with him. You could put him in his own say 3 gallon tank and then your male guppies would be safeiin your other tank. Welcome to the forum! It is a great place for information and exchanging ideas.

The male betta probably mistook the male guppies for a betta. What with the large fins and vivid colors.

Best to remove the betta, as previously mentioned.

I was planning to add a Betta to my community tank, i have heard ppl with no problem. Guess i will have to think again.

The neons could also pose a problem, besides the guppies. Neons are pretty colorful, and anything that colorful poses a threat to those fiesty bettas.
Something less colorful and threatening is the only choice, other than keeping him by himself.
my bettas like being by themself.

Welcome to the forum.

Bettas do just fine with some fish, less well with others. Corydoras catfish are great tank mates for bettas because they are never seen as competition. Cory cats live on the bottom of the tank and are chunky in shape. They are an excellent combination.
