Hello all, I couldn't get to edit my profile as it didn't work at all - but never mind, -

I'm thinking of keeping tropical fish and know as much about it as I know about brain transplanting so any suggestions where I can start off? - I want to build a collection, I'm not rich but I'm not poor either, so I could spend a few hundred if you know what I mean.

I am using my wife's e-mail (Viv) my name is actually NEIL.

Hope to hear a few good suggestions, many thanks.

First of all, welcome to the forum m8..

Where you putting your tank and what size tank are you thinking of m8?

Hi m8 - Thanks for your quick response, I have a second living room in my home which I sit in during the evening with a TV watching different progs to my wife - there is plenty of room for a tank around 1 metre wide (front) X 2 feet vertical (upright), maybe 15" deep (back) - I don't have the terminology as you can see. I have enough room for bigger than this but that would depend on the bank balance. £300 tank??? - ish??

Not certain of what I get for my money yet but I am looking around. I am a delivery driver and deliver to a Fish & Garden centre in Bow near Crediton, Devon - so I can look around there every day. Over to you!

Hi Neil

Welcome

I hope Viv knows you're using her email otherwise you might not be keeping fish for a long time :)

£300 should be a nice sum to get a decent tank, do you want to buy new or would you consider second hand, ebay is a very good place to get one form and with you been a driver, you could easily widen your choices as your can travel :)

If you want new, best to shop about and get a good deal as possible, most say buying seperate is cheaper but now a days, there is some great offers on a complete setup.

Where are you from ?

No probs, my e-mails not working so I use hers - I can't be bothered to call SKY (yet again) and go through all that techno stuff (yet again).

5teady,

I am in Exeter (more or less)

Hi All,

can anyone give me a guideline as to what fish would be a good start for me, I'm open to suggestions and I know that taste comes into it. I need some help here guys please. I have the money to start something I always wanted to do, but no knowledge. I will be buying some books very soon by the way.

Any help is very much appreciated.

Neil

That is a good sized starting tank :good:

With those types of dimentions, you could mebe look at second hand Juwel Rio 180(new and second hand) and Rio 240's(second hand). They come with internal filtration, heater and a hood-light-unit combo included. You could get the tank alone new on that budget, but I would advise that you purchase the specialy designed stand with it, as these will tank the weight of the 300kg ish tank when full and decorated, with an allowance for the stand(in the case of the Rio 240). If you have money left over form the equipment budget, you may wish to look at an exturnal filter too, as the Juwel internals will limit your choise of fish on some occasions.

Best thing to do re. fish, is look aroung your LFS, make a list of the ones you like, and post back here so that we can check the list, recomend a good mix and numbers, and also add any notes of things you should be aware of :good:

BTW, have you looked at [topic="113861"]this thread[/topic] about fishless cycling a tank before adding fish? It is far more ethicaly correct than the methord that the LFS will recomend, as it does not put a risk on the lives of your new pets.

:) When I first starting getting into fish agian I read different forums and their back forums. I learned a lot that way. I then starting asking questions. Slowly I started having my favorite fish and then I researched different fish. You have to start somewhere.
