If you do a fishless cycle, most of the usual problems can be avoided. Just think how many people that have problems with fish loss are newbies and the tank is cycling. After the tank is cycled and the fish are in it, algae and overfeeding probably become the 2 most common problems and those 2 are directly related (overfeeding can cause algae problems).
Another thing to do to avoid problems later is get a quarantine tank. It doesnt' have to be big (unles you plan to buy fish that are big already). A 5 gallon is probably enough. Anytime you buy new fish, especially if it from a LFS you aren't familiar with or whose tanks don't look to be the cleanest or best maintained, put them in the q-tank for 2 to 4 weeks to make sure there aren't carrying diseases like ich. Better to cure 3 or 4 fish than to have spread it to all your curent healthy fish and have to treat your whole tank.
